SUMMARY:A Tale of Two Marys
DESCRIPTION:Pamela Haughawout will present a virtual program through Zoom entitled “A Tale of Two Marys.” The Illinois Valley is justifiably proud of the leaders it has produced\, however\, we seldom mention the importance of the female leaders of the area. The presentation will be in honor of the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment (Women’s Suffrage) to the U. S. Constitution and will include information on two influential women from the Illinois Valley who made significant contributions in their fields and were coincidentally both named Mary. Mary Moreland was the first Congregational minister in the U.S. from Wyanet. Mary Hegeler Carus was a business and civic leader from LaSalle. Each was influential in her own community and provided pioneering leadership to the Illinois Valley. \nPamela Haughawout is from Peru\, IL and is a volunteer at the Bureau County Genealogical Society as well as a docent at the Hegeler Carus Mansion. She is a retired financial consultant to the health care industry. \nThe meeting will be open to the public via Zoom. The program will consist of the lecture which will be approximately 30 minutes followed by a few minutes for questions and comments. \nFollow the directions below to view our program: \n1. Go to the Zoom website and download the app to your computer\, iPad\, tablet\, or smartphone unless you have done this in the past and follow their directions. We suggest you do this a few days in advance to get familiar with Zoom. You can obtain instructions for setting up or using Zoom by viewing a YouTube tutorial: \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9isp3qPeQ0E \n2. SUMMARY:Anti-German Hysteria During WWI
DESCRIPTION:Heinz-Dietrich Suppan will be the speaker for the January 23\, 2020 meeting at the Bureau County Genealogical Society.  The meeting will be at 7:00 pm at 629 S. Main St.\, Princeton. \nSuppan teaches German and history at Marquette High School in Ottawa and serves as an adjunct instructor at Illinois Valley Community College.  He will give a presentation entitled “Anti-German Hysteria During WWI.”  Many Germans had come over in a migration wave in the late 19th century.  In the German tradition they built restaurants and guesthouses that had their own brewery.  In 1910\, the U.S. had 554 German-language newspapers\, as well as German-language school systems that coexisted with English-language schools.  By 1917\, because Germany was one of America’s adversaries in the war\, many Anglo-Americans began to fear that German Americans were still loyal to the Kaiser.  Suppan will tell us where the “Devil’s Triangle” was located and how social issues changed at the time.

She has been at the Mansion for 15 years and says she has been spoutin’ blarney for most of her life.
